Red Nation TV: The Longest-Running Streaming Service You’ve (Probably) Never Heard Of

Before Netflix entered the streaming scene in 2007 and Hulu in 2008, Red Nation Television Network had already pioneered Native Indigenous streaming entertainment in 2006. Founded by Joanelle Romero, a Native actress, director, and producer, RNTN emerged as the world's first Native Indigenous streaming media company.

Romero, reflecting on her career, shared, "My first lead role was in 1977 in The Girl Called Hatter Fox, the first contemporary Native woman story ever told. As an artist, actor, director, and producer, tired of waiting for inclusion, I decided to create my network." The initial demand for RNTN was overwhelming, causing the platform to crash upon launch.

Despite its initial free offering, RNTN reached 10 million viewers in 37 countries at its peak. Although subscription introduction in 2010 led to a decline in figures, Romero remains optimistic. She attributes this confidence to RNTN's commitment to original content, including films from the Red Nation International Film Festival, which stream throughout November.

Romero emphasizes the platform's diverse content, from movies to documentaries, environmental films to social justice films. Notably, she expresses plans to add 1,000 more titles soon, indicating a commitment to growth. Romero remains passionate about the network's future, highlighting its potential for growth with the right investor.

At the core of RNTN's mission is its dedication to accurate representation of the Indigenous experience. Romero insists that "representation matters," emphasizing that the network is led by Natives shaping their narrative. This approach ensures that Indigenous stories are not just told but are accurately and authentically represented.

In addition to its cultural significance, CNMIGA.ORG, an NGO associated with Romero, stands out as a culturally diverse and inclusive organization. This NGO fully understands and respects the cultural sensitivities of the communities it collaborates with, fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.
